Dodecahedron help

Setup guide

Everything you need to run mystery products with Dodecahedron. Stuck? Email support@touchstonecommerce.com.

Getting started

  1. Install Dodecahedron and answer one question: do you pack orders yourself, or does a 3PL ship them?
  2. Create a mystery product. Give it a name and price, choose whether shoppers pick an option such as size, and set the swap quantity: 1 for a mystery item, or more for a mystery bundle.
  3. Build its pool. Hand-pick products, or choose a collection or tag to make a smart pool that updates itself.
  4. Choose the location it ships from. The pool's stock must be at that location, or the mystery product shows as sold out.

Dodecahedron creates the mystery product in your store with SKUs starting MYS- and keeps its stock in step with the pool. Publish it to your storefront like any other product.

Choosing how you fulfill

In-house (you pack and ship)

The shopper's order keeps only the mystery product, so it stays a surprise. Open the mystery product in Dodecahedron to see which item to pack for each order. The order is tagged mystery-swap, and the pick is saved on the order for your staff.

Third-party (a 3PL ships)

Within seconds of checkout, Dodecahedron tags the shopper's order mystery-consolidated and puts it on hold. It then creates an internal order named like #1001-mystery, priced at $0, with every item in one box: the picked items plus anything else the shopper bought. Your 3PL ships that order. Tracking is copied back to the shopper's order, which notifies the shopper as usual.

Setting up your 3PL

Most 3PLs import every new Shopify order. Before your first mystery order, set up these rules in your 3PL's order import settings:

  1. Required: skip (don't import) orders tagged mystery-consolidated. Without this rule, your 3PL would receive both orders, and the shopper's other items would ship twice.
  2. Recommended: blacklist SKUs starting with MYS-. Mystery products aren't physical stock, so this stops your 3PL from flagging them as unknown or out of stock.
  3. International orders: set customs values for mystery shipments in your 3PL. The internal order is priced at $0, so customs forms built from it would declare nothing.

Not sure how? Ask your 3PL account manager for an "order import exclusion by tag" and a "SKU blacklist". Most 3PLs set these up in a few minutes.

Accounting, ERP and Flow

The internal -mystery orders exist only to ship the box. The sale is already on the shopper's order, so keep the internal orders out of anything that counts sales:

For developers and integrations, Dodecahedron also saves a machine-readable record on each mystery order (field mystery in the app's namespace) listing its internal order and the real items shipped, with SKUs and unit costs.

Cancellations and returns

Cancellations

Cancel the shopper's order in Shopify as usual. Dodecahedron cancels the internal order if it hasn't shipped and puts the picked items back in stock. If the box already left, the order is flagged so you can follow up.

Returns

Refund the shopper's order, not the -mystery order, and tick Restock.

How inventory works

Reports and reconciliation

Sales report: Dodecahedron's home page shows mystery revenue, orders, units cleared and cost recovered over the last 60 days.

Reconciliation: lists every item shipped from a mystery order with its date, mystery SKU, share of the revenue, SKU shipped, unit cost, internal order, tracking and status. Unit costs are captured at the time of sale. Download it as CSV for your books.

Shopify gives apps the last 60 days of orders, so reports cover that window.
